Discount airline Southwest currently has 53 daily flights operating from Philadelphia and this could potentially double by the spring.
In the coming months the airline expects to lease 12 new gates at Philadelphia International Airport, which would greatly increase Southwest’s capabilities.
Currently Southwest operates out of six gates in Philadelphia.
It’s not yet known where the new flights would go. One possibility is that they won’t go to new destinations, and Southwest will simply increase the frequency of flights on its schedule.
Airline consultant Michael Boyd believes that Southwest will face higher operation costs in the coming years and must expand to remain profitable.
He told the Philadelphia Inquirer: “Initially, look for a lot more north-south flying by Southwest to Florida and other cities in the Southeast, and for them to put the squeeze on US Airways. They will also fill in where they don’t fly now.”
