Spirit Airlines will become the second carrier to provide service from Pheonix Mesa Gateway Airport to south east Mesa.
The low-cost airline will open with routes to Las Vegas and Dallas. Spirit hopes Gateway will funnel more passengers into its network of low-cost flights serving mostly the tourist trade. The carrier has about 45 destinations, concentrated in the eastern half of the country, Latin America and the Caribbean.
Gateway is a former Air Force base that closed in 1993. It took almost 13 years to land its first civilian carrier, but Vision Airlines stayed only two years after beginning operations in 2006.
